Manly P. Hall

Manly P. Hall (1901–1990) was a Canadian-American mystic, philosopher, and prolific writer on esoteric traditions. Best known for The Secret Teachings of All Ages (1928), he explored ancient wisdom, symbolism, alchemy, astrology, Hermeticism, and mystery schools.

Hall was deeply involved in Freemasonry, becoming a 33rd-degree Mason in the Scottish Rite in 1954, though he was not initially raised through traditional lodge initiation. He viewed Freemasonry as a guardian of esoteric wisdom, emphasizing its roots in ancient mystery traditions.

His teachings synthesized various esoteric traditions, arguing that secret knowledge had been preserved across civilizations. He believed in the evolution of the soul, the power of symbols, and that humanity's spiritual progress depended on understanding these ancient truths. Hall also studied Atlantis, seeing it as a lost civilization of advanced spiritual knowledge.

He founded the Philosophical Research Society in Los Angeles in 1934, promoting mystical philosophy and self-development. His work influenced many modern esoteric and occult thinkers.
